iPhone 16.. Learn about Apple's 2024 phone series

It’s only been a few months since Apple launched its latest iPhone 15 series, but rumors are already buzzing about the next generation: the iPhone 16, set to be released in the fall of 2024, and leaks and speculation are circulating online.

Signifying major improvements over its predecessors, from design tweaks to powerful performance improvements, here’s a comprehensive overview of what we know and what we can expect about Apple’s upcoming iPhone lineup.

iPhone 16 Design:

In one of his newsletters, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman suggested that Apple could make a major design change with the iPhone 16, perhaps akin to the transition from the iPhone X to the iPhone 11.

He hinted that the “Pro” models have seen an increase in size, with the iPhone 16 Pro reaching 6.3 inches and the Pro Max reaching 6.9 inches. Rumors also point to a new vertical camera arrangement, similar to the iPhone 11 and 12, and the possible introduction of an “always-on display.

Performance and processing power:

Aside from aesthetics, Apple is also reportedly focusing on improving important aspects such as camera capabilities, battery life, thermal design, and overall performance. Under the hood, the iPhone 16 series is expected to be powered by next-generation A-series chips, which are supposedly designed using the advanced N3E technology. These chips could offer improved speed and longer battery life. Meanwhile, the standard models could feature the A17 chip, while the Pro models could be equipped with the A18 Pro chip with an additional GPU core and improved Neural Engine capabilities, similar to how Apple differentiates between performance chips in its standard and Pro models.

Battery:

Battery life could be extended with improved battery technology and support for faster 40W wired charging. An improved thermal management system using graphene and a metal battery case could also be implemented on the Pro models. Reports suggest that the new battery technology will be used to extend usage time, along with support for faster charging speeds.

Leaked images suggest a redesigned 3,355mAh battery for the Pro model, indicating Apple’s commitment to addressing users’ power concerns.

Camera Upgrades:

In the camera department, Apple appears to be making big improvements once again, with reports suggesting a move away from the traditional diagonal camera setup in favor of a new vertical arrangement. This shift is supposed to enable features like spatial video capture, specifically designed for Apple’s Vision Pro headphones.

Furthermore, there are also rumors surrounding a 5x optical “Tetra Prism” zoom lens, a 48MP ultra-wide lens for better low-light photography, and even a unique 48MP wide-angle camera with a hybrid lens on the Pro Max. This could represent a significant improvement in zoom capabilities, promising users versatility in their photography endeavors.

Button locations:

Apple is also expected to make its famous “action button” from the iPhone 15 Pro standard across all models, and the company is said to introduce a new pressure-sensitive “capture button” that resembles a physical camera shutter.

AI Integration and Software Improvements:

To keep up with its competitors, Apple is also expected to double down on AI capabilities with the iPhone 16 lineup, and while details are still scarce, rumors point to exclusive access to advanced AI features in iOS 18. From smarter Siri-Messages integration to personalized Apple Music playlists, the possibilities are exciting, promising a more intuitive and seamless user experience.

iPhone 16 price:

While iPhone prices have been steadily rising, the iPhone 15 or even 14 has maintained the same launch price as its predecessor. However, given the rumors of upgrades, the official prices of the iPhone 16 may increase. Industry analysts expect a slight price hike compared to previous models. Given the expected upgrades and developments, a $100 price hike across the series seems reasonable.
